Early Life and Education
Leszek Kołakowski, an eminent British philosopher of Polish origin, was born into a family of educators.
His father, a teacher and journalist, was tragically executed by the Gestapo in 1943.
Enrolling at the University of Łódź in 1945, Kołakowski soon joined the Polish Workers' Party in 1947. His early philosophical explorations included a dissertation on Spinoza at the University of Warsaw in 1953, where he later taught the history of philosophy from 1959 to 1968.
Political Disillusionment
During a visit to the Soviet Union in 1951-1954, Kołakowski witnessed the stark realities of communism, prompting a reevaluation of his pro-Stalinist views.
