Monica Seles was born on December 2, 1973, in the small town of Novi Sad, then part of Yugoslavia, to parents Esther and Karoy Seles.

Her older brother initially served as her mentor, but her father soon took over her training as he felt her brother was too lenient. However, their limited family budget prevented them from hiring a professional coach.
